Driving You Up-to speed on Indore Metro Rail Project’s Rolling Stock
Metro Rail is the most optimum form of public transportation as it has been developed to counter the ever growing population of the city along with its traffic needs. To ensure the proper facilitation of public commute, a well-established and proven method of transport is necessary. Making this a priority, Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation is all set to launch Metro Rail services in the business capital and hub of M.P, Indore. The Super Priority Corridor of Indore Metro Rail stretches approx 5.3 kms, starting from Gandhinagar extending all the way to Super Corridor-3 (SC-3) in the city. Rolling stock is deemed to be the most important part of a Metro Rail system.
Rolling Stock: Rolling Stock refers to railway vehicles, including both powered and unpowered like locomotives, passenger car (coaches), frieght Wagons, non-revenue cars.
Coach/car: coach/car are the passenger vehicles which can be unpowered, self-propelled, single and multiple units.
Bogie: A bogie is chasis or framework under the Rolling Stock which carries wheelsets (a modular sub assembly of wheels and axles)
Now, we take a look at the components of Rake:
Rake is the structure/facilitation that the people see and travel in, denoting the Train as a whole. Rake is mainly made of two types of coaches/cars for Bhopal Metro Rail Project:
● Driving Motor Car (DMC)
● Trailer Car (TC)
These units are then combined in a specific order to form a Rake, wherein the number of coaches and the length of the train are determined based on the population density of people moving from one place to another at a given time.
The Indore Metro Train Project is going to be operational with a total of 25 Trainsets also known as Rakes and the proper designed sequence of the coaches recommended are:
3 Car Unit – It is considered to be the basic unit of the Metro system. The system consists of 2 Driving Motor Car (DMC) and a Trailer Car (TC). This is the minimum valid number for Metro operation which is preferred and suitable for places with low population density. Coaches are primarily made of Stainless Steel to enhance corrosion resistance properties and strength.
Speed of Metro Rail: The purpose of Metro Train is to facilitate our urban traffic, for this the metro stations are in close proximity to each other. For this reason, the Metro Rail system has been designed according to the maximum speed of 90 kmph, but in passenger service, our metro rail will run at a maximum speed of 80 kmph.
Headway: The time intervals between two successive running trains is defined as headway. Indore Metro trains are designed for 90 Second Headway. However, it may be decided as per the requirement of passenger traffic.
Train Configuration: Train consists of two Driving Motor Car (DMC) and one Trailer Car (TC) with 66.66% of Motorization and coupled with semi-permanent couplers.

Mode of Operation: Train is designed to operate in Two Types of mode, namely:
i. GOA-2 (Grade of Automation-2): In GOA-2 Operation the train is run by driver in the Driver's Cab of Leading DMC car which will have all the controlling system required to operate the train.
ii. GOA-4 (Grade of Automation-4): The system is the most advanced system of railway automation wherein train runs without a driver and driver cab of DMC is removed by removing partition door whereas the controlling units covered. This is also called Unattended tarin Operation (UTO).
According to the planning of the Indore Metro Rail Project, the Metro Rail will be run by the Driver in the initial phase i. e. GOA-2 operation, which will later run under GOA-4 (UTO) transitioning to being driverless in the coming time.
Seating arrangement in Indore Metro Rail will be Longitudinal seating arrangement for people to sit in Metro Rail. The passenger capacity of the 3-Car Metro Train is 971.
CCTV Camera System: In today’s modern era where security is of paramount importance, CCTV cameras are Crucial for security point of view. Keeping all the safety parameter in view, CCTV cameras will be installed in Indore metro rail trains there will be camera installed inside and outside of coaches which will be used for counting/accounting of passengers during emergency, to keep an eye on the track, identification of unattended bags and camera tempering/obscured detection in passenger area.
Doors: There will be a total of 8 doors in each coach, four on one side and four on the other side. Along with this, both the DMC coaches in the train will have an emergency gate which is called Detainment Door at the front which can be brought in use for the facilitation of exit of passengers in case of any emergency.
Air Conditioning System: Indore Metro Rail will introduce a very modern & state-of-the-art air conditioning system for passenger comfort, whose air cooling will vary according to the passenger load. Air conditioning systems are designed with germ control in air filtration.
Display Unit: The work of display unit is very important in Indore Metro Rail. Different types of display units will be installed in the trains, so that passengers receive proper information about train route, gate opening direction, next station etc., during the journey. Different types of display units will be installed inside the train above all the gates, as well as display units will be placed on the front of the train as well as outside the train on the side of the compartment. There will also be an arrangement of an infotainment system in the display inside the coach for entertainment and information purposes. There will be a Passenger Announcement System for passengers to spread additional information through loudspeakers with a synchronized automatic announcement function.
Smart Lighting: An advanced system is being used in the Metro Rail service for lighting, under which the lighting level of the car will vary according to the natural light. Along with this, there will be a film on the windows of the train to prevent the penetration of ultraviolet (UV) rays.
PECU (Passenger Emergency Communication Unit): Each Coach will have 4 PECU units with the help of which passengers can talk to the driver in case of any emergency. In the GOA-4 system (UTO) passengers will be able to talk directly to the Operation Control Center (OCC).
Fire Alarm, Smoke Alarm System and Fire Extinguisher: 4 fire and smoke alarms are installed in each coach, which informs and cautions the controlling unit at the time of any emergency. Along with this, fire extinguishers will also be installed in each coach for better emergency resilience.
Condition Based Monitoring System:
i. Hot Axle Detection System:
ii. ODDD Device (Obstruction Deflection and Derailment Detection Device).
iii. Wheel Profile Measurement System:
iv. Automatic Track Monitoring System:
Braking System: Intensive & state-of-the-art technology will be used in our metro for the braking system with Regenerative Braking which will work according to the load of the train.
Cyber Security System: Train is designed to ensure next-generation threat detection to safeguard the operational network and from emerging cyber threats and ensure regulatory compliance as per International Standards.
